Smoking is considered a recreational activity by some and a vice to be avoided by others. Smoking is a risky habit. However, the military needs people who are risk takers. In the past, the military would issue cigarettes to its troops. Now, however, the US Air Force is moving towards a tobacco-free service by the year 2010. Although this ban is understandable in terms of its health benefits, it may result in risk takers leaving or avoiding the Air Force for other jobs or a more smoker friendly branch of service such as the Marine Corps. This could weaken the Air Forces’ force projection and overall power. The final result could be a loss of freedom and the end of democracy. So although educating troops on the negative consequences of smoking is a good thing, banning tobacco use in the Air Force is a mistake.
Some people think that human needs for farmland, housing, and industry are more important than saving land for endangered animals. What do you think?
The population is growing with an exponential rhythm and corollaries of needs ranging from food and housing to new industries are evolving. An attempt to satisfy these growing needs, inherent to a population growth, will imply much more land to expand farms, industries, grow raw materials, and build new houses. On the other side of the scales, are the endangered animals bound to suffer from such an expansion. PLEASE CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST OF THE ESSAY
There’s No Place Like Home
We have asked ourselves for hundreds of years, why some people prefer to live in a small town, maybe they want a quiet place to enjoy and live. On the other hand, there are some people who prefer to live in a big city, perhaps because they like noise and crowds. I think there are some important points to consider when making a decision about where to live.
I had a class of French students studying English. It was a short week and there were no performance evaluations - no measures of assessment remained. They were willing to do mentally and linguistically taxing activities despite the short holiday week. The students had amazing intrinsic motivation. I was astounded. How can one explain this?
Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with?
University courses tend to nurture vivid debates on better education. Does better education involve required attendance? Concerning this, people have two divergent opinions. On the one hand, exponents of the compulsory attendance advocate that there must be no excuse for university students to attend classes, in so far as they are at a final and vital stage of their education. On the other hand, opponents argue that at a university level, students are mature and as such, they should be exonerated of mandatory attendance and let free from any coercion, in a view to create an environment conducive to individual research. This issue will evolve around three main points: the proponents’ point of view first, then the opponents’ opinion, and finally a middle of the road suggestion.
